چکیده

Flow in the open channels has great importance in the hydraulic engineering. Any disturbances as contractions and expansions affect the flow characteristics like velocities, flow rates and water surface profiles. Their effects on the flow must be considered during the design process of flow structures. In the last decades numerical solutions become popular as experimental studies take time, may be not economical and have scale effect. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a type of numerical modeling and helps us to solve problems involving fluid flow. In this study, some physical experiments were set in the laboratory to obtain data required for flow along the sluice gate and conjugate depths of hydraulic jump of flow after sluice gate. FLOW-3D, which uses VOF (Volume Of Fluid) method and solve RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations, is used for numerical modeling in order to verify experimental results. All measurements were compared with FLOW 3D in order to verify the ability of the CFD modeling. FLOW 3D and experimental results showed 95% consistency with each other. Keywords—Flow-3D, numerical modeling, open channels, sluice gate.

مطالعه جریان همزمان از زیر یک دریچه‌ کشویی و روی یک سرریز لبه تیز ذوزنقه‌ای

The combined system of gate and weir is used for flow measurement in open channels. But in case the passing water has floating material and sediment it damages their performance and hence error of measurement will increase. In order to solve this problem, weir and gate can be combined and a concentrated hydraulic system known as weir-gate can be developed, thus allowing sediments transportation...

Numerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater

Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard  turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...

Numerical simulation of in-cylinder tumble flow field measurements and comparison to experimental results

This paper presents a comparison between measured and predicted results of the in-cylinder tumble flow and the flow coefficient generated by a port-valve-liner assembly on a steady-flow test bench. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods were employed to gain further insight into characteristics of an engine. The purpose was to advance understanding of the stationary turbulenc...

Free-surface flow simulations for discharge-based operation of hydraulic structure gates

We combine non-hydrostatic flow simulations of the free surface with a discharge model based on elementary gate flow equations for decision support in operation of hydraulic structure gates. A water level-based gate control used in most of today’s general practice does not take into account the fact that gate operation scenarios producing similar total discharged volumes and similar water level...

A CFD Simulation of Hydrogen Production in Microreactors

In this study, the modeling of hydrogen production process in microreactors by methanol-steam reforming reaction is investigated. The catalytic reaction of methanol-steam reforming producing hydrogen is simulated considering a 3D geometry for the microreactor. To calculate diffusion among species, mixture average correlations are compared to Stephan-Maxwell equations. The reactions occurring in...
